March 2010 Publicaster Update

A new Publicaster release was launched this week, and we introduced 23 new features to the application!  Log in to your Publicaster account to view the full list of the new features on the Dashboard.  We think you'll like what you see!

In our quest to keep our clients CAN-SPAM compliant, we are instituting a final requirement for emails. Starting 4/8/2010, all outgoing emails from Publicaster must include an Opt Out snippet to ensure compliance. Emails must include either the Global Opt Out, List Unsubscribe, or Subscriber Preferences snippets going forward. Major updates from the 3/2/10 release include:


  • Opt-in form confirmation emails now contain full personalization support.  You may include any of the Publicaster snippets in the confirmation email used in your Notified Single or Double opt-in forms, including personalization from list data or subscriber links.  This will also create Distribution Reports in the Reporting section, so you can track the behavior of new subscribers from the confirmation email.
  • You can now add an unlimited number of extra mailing lists in an opt-in form.  Doing so will automatically add subscribers who sign up on the form to all of the lists that you select in Step 2 of the  form builder in Publicaster.

Campaign Manager

  • All pages in the Campaign Manager (Send/Schedule, Auto Response, or RSS to Email) now have the ability to preview the first 50 email addresses on the selected list or segmentation.  Select a list and click the Preview button to the right of the list to open a pop-up with the top 50 addresses on the list.
  • When you're getting ready to send an email, sometimes you remember mid-setup that you need to add a new From Address, Physical Mailing Address, Campaign Series, or Email to use in that distribution.  In the past you needed to browse away from the page to set up the new item, but no longer!  Now you can click any of the "New" buttons to the right of the selections on the Send/Schedule, Auto Response, or RSS to Email pages to open a pop-up window to add the new item.  Click Refresh on the page to refresh the drop-down.

Creative Manager

  • When sending a Quick Test of an email, the default Physical Mailing Address for the account will now be added to the test email. 
  • You can now get a quick analysis of the subject line for your email by clicking the Analyze button to the right of the subject line box.  This will give you tips for making changes to your subject line to meet email marketing best practices, such as not using all caps.

List Manager

  • You can now choose the order of the values for drop-down menu, check box, or radio button list types in Public Content.  This makes it much easier to add custom field types to the Subscriber Preferences form for your subscribers to select.
  • There are three new features related to segmentations in this release:
    • First, we have added a distribution picker for the Sent Email condition to allow you to specify which distribution of a sent email should be used in the segment. 
    • You will now find three new operators for Text conditions: "Is NOT One of", "Contains One of", and "Does NOT Contain One of."  All three make it easy for you to enter multiple values in the text box to segment by.
    • The biggest (and coolest!) change in segmentations is the addition of some new metrics: Forwarded, Viewed in Browser, Shared With Social Network, Converted, and Viewed Mobile Version.  These metrics pull data from the Distribution Reports to segment based on any of the subscriber's behavior in the distribution.


  • Related to the new segmentation conditions (see above) you can now create segments directly in a Distribution Report.  To create a segment from distribution report results, select the report detail in the report (such as Open Detail or Top Domains) and click Create Segmentation at the top of the page.
  • You can now change the default page that appears for any Campaign Series under Distribution Reports: Summary (the old default), All Reports, Metered Sends, or A/B Split Sends.  Just click the checkbox for "Make this the default view for your campaign" under any of the pages to make it the default.
  • The Comparative Reports now include the Email Name, as well as the Delivered metric.
