New Requirement: Opt-Out Snippet

This April Blue Sky Factory is putting another new requirement into place: the Opt-Out snippet.  Starting on April 8th 2010, all emails that go out through Publicaster will require an opt-out snippet in both the HTML and plain text versions of the email in order to send it. This requirement is to help you remember to include a working opt-out mechanism in all emails, which is a requirement for CAN-SPAM compliance.

There are three snippets that can be used in emails to meet this requirement: Global Opt-Out, List Unsubscribe, or Subscriber Preferences.  All of the links include an option to opt out of all future mailings so any of them can be used to be compliant.  You can also choose to include the snippets in a default footer in the Account Preferences section of the Administration button.

The code snippets can all be found in the Insert Code Snippet button on the editor. Click here for instructions on adding the snippets, including descriptions and screenshots of all of them in action.

If you currently use your own opt-out mechanism or if you believe your email is exempt from this requirement, please contact support@whatcounts.com for further details and review.

Opt-Out Snippet Requirement FAQ's

Why do I need to include an opt-out snippet in emails?
A working opt-out mechanism is required for CAN-SPAM compliance. Starting in April, all emails going out through Publicaster must include a snippet.
If I use my own opt-out mechanism, do I need to use the snippet?
If you have your own working system in place, please contact support@whatcounts.com to discuss options.
What if my email is a transactional email? Do I still need to use the snippet?
If you believe that your email is exempt from this requirement, please contact support@whatcounts.com and include a copy of the email for further review.
How do I add the opt-out snippet to my email?
The code snippets can all be found in the Insert Code Snippet button on the editor. Click here for instructions on adding the snippets, including descriptions and screenshots of all of them in action.
If I have the snippets in my automatic footer, do I need to add the snippet to my email too?
No - if the snippet is in your footer and the footer is active, you do not need to add it to the email as well. Publicaster will detect if the snippet is found in the footer and whether the footer is active.
How can I add the snippet to my footer?
The code snippets can all be found in the Insert Code Snippet button on the editor in the Email Manager section. First add the snippet to an email to see how it looks (in both the HTML and plain text versions) and you can then copy and paste that into the footer in Administration, under Account Preferences.
